here's a piece i sold at open market to christine's boyfriend. it's a height war between a small giraffe and an almost equally tall ostrich! who will win....!

i have a couple of other pieces i haven't scanned yet so as soon as i get to that, you all shall see!

i got an opportunity to work on a book cover illustration with the amazing rodrigo corral for a book called swimming with piranhas during feeding time: my life doing dumb stuff with animals. what a fit! i love doing dumb stuff with animals!

and for all you people out there on break or in term, you should go to the illustration workshops. i was surprised to find no one there except when gary showed up later. its mon-friday 2-7 in A-13 upstairs in the annex. no one should let great instructors sit lonesomely in the annex waiting and hoping one person will come to seek advice. GO!!

so on my last day, i get an assignment from the new york times for the letters page about reading aloud.

it was a pleasant surprise since i didn't think they would give me anything so soon, but like i said, a pleasant surprise!

then i was informed that animals doing human things is something the paper stays away from so leanne asked the sketches to be more direct and with humans.

new york has been amazing! today is the last day :( but I'm really happy to be going home too. Christine and I took a lot of photos, but not as many as we could have because she forgot the cable :( its okay! we kept the best ones.

We've been getting around town just by looking on yelp for the best food in town, which has been working out beautifully!

We went to Random House yesterday and everyone was so niceeee!!!!! I wish all of them were in my family tree. It's such a new experience showing your work to people who you could one day work with, but I'm just so glad people are friendly because it minimizes my flustered nature, haha!

hi guys

this week has been chock full of work because gary baseman's show is tonight and he's throwing this huge carnival/festival/extravaganza at the corey helford gallery and miss christine and i have been bustling around helping him make the little zine booklet that you can get (for freeeee) if you go to the show! he wanted everyone to leave with SOMETHING so christine and i made 298 of these books. it was a lot of work considering that we're both participating in open market, which is tomorrow! in the morning time!

anyway, you guys should go to the show. christine and i are hosting a game next to the big red hot cha cha cha so come out of your caves and play!

we're gonna sell really cool stuff tomorrow at open market, so go to that too! it's in old town at one colorado where the laemmle and johnny rockets is.

and thennn we're off to new york for 2 weeks! ee! ee! excited!

i repainted the background on this piece so it looks more finished. op ed ended yesterday and i'm sad because that was really a good class.

this is my op art piece about the more rocky parts of a two month long road trip i took during the summer of 2003 across the country.

best of series cover for illustration for publishing. i did the type separately on acetone because I know the values are wonky and it needs to be CHANGED!

heya duudes, its week 13! AAAAAAHHHH

either way, last week was the end of the dot exchange mentor program, and i had a really good time in it. my mentor was nathan ota and we got along really well and he definitely helped filter down some of my decisions with what i want to have my portfolio lean more towards when i graduate. we had a dinner reception thing and i embarrassed myself with my poor word choice, but everything was okay because most people know i am a total goon.

this was a painting that i did for nathan as a THANKS! and its 5"x 5" wood board. gessoed and then painted with gouache.

it is of a sloth making the infamous 90s hand gesture, 'whatever'!

this week's op ed final about how new york uplifted the ban on selling liquor and food in the same store. i did have a very fun time painting this. in comparison to all my other pieces i did this term, i have to admit that this time i just dove into the environment and tried to avoid the usual vignette thing. gimme some kudos for that ok?

first kramer's cover final. mark and esther literally chucked the project at us and wanted a finish in a week. for those who aren't familiar with the comic anthology, the covers are usually pretty out there and almost random. my concept here was albinimals (albino animals) surrounding a chameleon with a rad rainbow tattoo. and fuzzy cactus-like type. green with envy!!!!

after the crit i refined some ideas and decided to give the good ol brush pen another go. i'm much more comfortable at drawing figures faced to the left, so here's my attempt at showing my versatility. somewhat.

we went down to FAMILY BOOKSTORE today by lacma. its owned by sammy harkham, who was not only nice enough to tell us about his work and his store, but also gave us his proofs from the newest kramers ergot book. siiiick! and yes, it is that huge book. larger than your torso! christine and i biked down to family from the wilshire/western station. maaaaan does it feel nice to be outside! the weather lately has been absolutely beautiful.

AAAAAND i recently bought tickets to nyc. i'm going on the 7th of may until the 20th. if any of you guys have any fantastical suggestions about what to see and where to go, i would love to know!

hey dudes, here is my first book dummy for illustration for publishing. the book had to be a list of some sort and its about the different sexual acts that animals engage in when impressing their mates. still in the process of becoming a finished book, bound and everything. i have about 7 more illustrations to go and then hopefully get this thing made and sell it! this just shows the process of sketch ideas and the final pieces are painted with gouache. 7x7 inches

hey dudes!

what a break its been. ive been seriously unproductive and regaining my sanity by watching hours of 30 rock and waking up late in the afternoon. things i cannot do when the term begins! now that there are only a few days left, my break will play out as it has been as of the last few weeks!

i've also currently become hooked to daft punk and pounding out my soul at the gym at ungodly hours! all this holiday new years extravaganzanism has gotten me crazy and easily irritated by large groups of mingling human beings..but it will all become something i envy in a few short days.

luke and i saw gran torino yesterday and it was a very enjoyable movie. go see it you fools!

i did not manage to go anywhere during this lengthy break which is upsetting but whatever! i've decided in my heart that im going to nyc after this term finishes itself and taking summer off will be the best thing since sliced bread. also most likely moseying over to china for a while to see family and hopefully catch the longest SOLAR ECLIPSE EVER!!!! 6 freaking minutes on july 22nd and only viewable by those on the other side of the planet. aka china! YEAHHHH suckaas!

so i drew a tiny bit but taking 6 classes next term is going to murder my ass so i figured i would do something different over the break. dont want my creative juices turning into poison....

EITHER WAY im feeling stupidly optimistic right now and only 40% looking forward to next term. i would show you guys my minimal amount of sketches and the new muscles ive been sculpting at the gym but frankly i do not have the patience to get out from under these covers to get a camera. and i have no scanner.

lastly luke got my the charley harper illustrated life for christmas and its the best thing ever. better than my summer plans. YEAAAAAAAHHHHH BITCHESSS!!!! 2009!!!!

today is my mom's birthday!

happy birthday maaaaam!

so i am pretty sure our digital camera has turned into a genuine piece of digital trash so i have not been able to show you kiddies anything interesting whatsoever except walls of text.

anyway this week has been slow and tardy. after coming back from ape i realized that there isnt that much time left until the end of the term.

good and bad!

and since a light term is pretty chiiilllllllll...i've been a little bit on the lazy side this weekend....*shame*

either way it was fun and im enjoying the cold.

i had lunch with gary baseman and danni and christine this weekend and that was quite an experience.

i watched that swedish vampire movie (let the right one in) at the laemmle yesterday with christine mashanda and kevin....it was pretty good so you should go watch it!

christine and i also made oatmeal cookies that were quite delectable!

and we watched silent hill...

and took creeper pictures around town...

and biked....

and ate at los gringos locos today at lunch....

and was just a bit late to class.....

but it was all ok!

we had some long demos today.

hey kiddies

so i realize now, as i do almost everyday...that time passes by stupidly fast.

more than four months ago we decided that ape (alternative press expo) was a wonderful idea and that we should totally sign up and DO IT!

now that those months have vanished, we're scurrying to get all our shit together so we can have a successful trip and overall experience....on the first of november.

but hey! that is...SATURDAY!

in case you dont know, its already THURSDAY NIGHT.

christine and i are sitting here in the library barely able to get our homework done (on a light term too, pathetic!) with friends constantly creeping in the dark on the other side of the window...some humping, some squatting...

either way, our plan is to mosey on up to san francisco...uh...TOMORROW.

after a five hour class and a 2 hour tour. JEEEEEEZ. people, feel for us, please! that's a 6 hour drive, at the least!

so...pictures will be taken, adventures will be had...

im going to be back on tuesday which is VOTE DAY...(im so happy its going to end...) and luke's birthday!

im filled with anxiety right now...but in a good way.
